Rory Reid has agreed to pay a $25,000-administrative fine after an investigation into their use of political action committees to funnel hundreds of thousands of dollars in her unsuccessful gubernatorial attempt, Secretary of State Ross Miller said Friday.
The settlement means $ 933,000 in speeches by Reid's economic leadership PACS. Some of this money was then distributed to 90 smaller committees which contributed to his campaign.
Two campaign workers, David Cohen and Joanna Paul, agreed that collective fines of $ 2,500.
Settlement statement said that while Reid's campaign interprets the State's law in various ways, Reid and the other admitted that "If the issue proceed to litigation, sufficient evidence exists to the secretary of state's conclusion could be maintained by a trier of fact".
Reid had consulted the election lawyers and secretary of state's office and believed the arrangement was legal.
-I am satisfied there is a confirmation that there was no bad faith on my part, and that my campaign sought legal advice and the advice of secretary of state's office before you proceed, "said Reid in an email to The Associated Press. -I am abnormal strong secretary of state's interpretation of this ambiguous law, but to avoid the burden of litigation, I agreed to this solution.
Miller acknowledged that a lawyer with the campaign had contacted his Office and thought, based on the verbal conversation, that campaign finance structure was allowed under Nevada law.
Reid, son of US Senate majority leader Harry Reid, lost the Governor's race in November to Republican Brian Sandoval.
State law restricts contributions from PACS to $ 10,000 per election. Investigation surrounded allegations, first raised by the Las Vegas Sun columnist Jon Ralston political, that these borders were skirted when large contribution to economic leadership PAC, an umbrella group was then distributed to a network of smaller PAC committees to make donations to Reid's campaign.
The 90 smaller PACs were recorded using the same Las Vegas residential address and disbanded after the election in November.
As Secretary, Cohen and Paul incorporated and registered small PACS and left not a related organization.
Reid's campaign and PACs followed all requirements, the settlement statement said.
